Presentation Description: 1. For a true transformation of the energy system towards a more affordable, secure and clean energy system, two main transformations are required: an energy transition (with more renewable energy sources on the grid) and a sustainability transition (with more sustainable equipment balancing energy- and material efficiency) 2. The energy transition (with more renewable energy technologies on the grid) is a transformation from a fossil-fuel- to a material-intensive energy system reducing carbon emissions at operation stage, but increasing emissions from the processing and manufacturing of more materials much needed to enable this transformation. 3. Particularly for transformers being long-lasting, energy- and material-intensive products, where main materials such as steel, copper and Aluminium are also highly relevant for renewable energy technologies, specifying for and designing more sustainable transformers balancing energy- and material efficiency is key to support end-users decarbonization and sustainability priorities and ambitions 4. A key approach to inform policy makers, and to engage with customers on specifying and designing more sustainable transformers is the scientific, data-driven life cycle assessment approach
